Reading

At Harwood Park we aim to promote and develop the key skills of reading alongside promoting a lifelong love of reading. We use objectives set out in the National Curriculum and Development Matters to support teaching and learning.

Children are taught the skills of reading from the start where they begin Read Write Inc lessons in the Summer Term of Nursery through to Year Two. In other year groups reading skills are developed through focused English lessons, RAMP reading lessons and reading in  a range of other subjects, all using high quality texts.

Children also have home reading books which they should read often to an adult. We use our home reading challenge to monitor reading at home. At school children read individually to adults, as part of a class through class texts and adults enjoy reading and sharing books with their class every day.  In addition children have access to a wide range of quality texts in classroom reading areas and in our school libraries.

Reading is an important skill for life and should be encouraged at every opportunity!
