Welcome to Languages!

Harwood Park has taught French for several years through activities within classes and on displays around the school.

Teaching and Learning

Teaching French is used across all of KS2 and the focus for learning  is on practical communication. Teaching is in line with the recommendations of the National Curriculum, with modifications in place which allow for the individual and differentiated needs of the children.

Across KS2 all pupils will learn to:

  • understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources

  • speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation

  • can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt

  • discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.

Teaching across the school.

KS2 children have a regular thirty minutes lesson of modern foreign language a week, in order to ensure progression and skills development. The curriculum that is followed is based on the guidance given in the revised National Curriculum.

At Harwood Park children are taught to know and understand how to:

· Ask and answer questions

· Use correct pronunciation and intonation

· Memorise words

· Interpret meaning

· Understand basic grammar

· Work in pairs and groups, and communicate in French

· Look at life in another culture

During French sessions children are given the opportunity to work as a class, as individuals and as part of a group.

'One language sets you in a corridor for life.

Two languages opens every door along the way.'
